In my opinion, Popular Culture is what is currently "in". It can range from trendy clothes to hot new gadgets. Popular culture is not limited to material items. Certain words or phrases may be popular for a few months but could cause embarrassment if said a year or two later. Society as a whole determines what is popular culture. Where and how one is raised plays a huge role in popular culture. Clothes that people wear in New York might be a completely different style than those worn in Atlanta.

Popular culture is vital in the business world.  You have to keep up with the "happenings" of society in order to be successful. Business plans, products, and even ways of communications used two years ago might not cut it today. With technology consistently changing and the economic yo-yo, companies have to switch up their sales strategies. Not only do they have to keep up with what is in demand and what is obsolete in consumers' eyes, but they have to create the next hot item in order to stay ahead of the curve.

Mobile devices are big examples of popular culture. The evolution of that piece of technology is amazing to think about. It is crazy to think about but there actually was a time where not everyone had a cell phone! Less than ten years ago cellular phones were rarely seen. Now it is assumed that a person has one. I didn't receive my first phone until 2000. Even then the only functions of that phone was to send/receive phone calls. Currently, phones can double as laptops and they are essential to the everyone ranging from primary school students to business professionals. It is next to impossible to drive anywhere without seeing someone on their phone while driving.
